SITE DESCRIPTION

Students who participate in an externship position with Cox Automotive’s Legal Department will have the opportunity to gain experience in a broad variety of legal issues and legal services encountered by in-house corporate attorneys, including contracts, regulatory oversight, corporate compliance, and claims/dispute supervision. The Legal Department deals with all legal issues involving business needs, administrative and regulatory requirements, and compliance matters affecting the company. In addition, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cox Enterprises, Inc., the Cox Automotive Legal Department interfaces with its parent company’s legal department in aligning advice to the business.

Under supervision by Assistant GCs and senior and corporate attorneys, students may be involved in the following activities: drafting and reviewing contracts and participating in negotiations of same; conducting research on routine and complex legal questions; advising the business on operational legal questions; participating in compliance policy, training, and monitoring activities; and review of strategy on claims and disputes. Externs are also exposed to the structure and importance of a quality in-house corporate legal department and may have contact with GCs, high-level business executives, and other key stakeholders in a for-profit industry setting.  Students should expect to shadow Cox Automotive lawyers in their daily activities. Students participating in this externship should expect to be exposed to myriad legal disciplines including compliance; labor and employment; data licensing; intellectual property; transactional law; and dispute resolution.
