November 15, 2014 - Editor Tips, How to, Widgets

The gsu-look-alike theme[1] has 5 widget area,

  1. Main Sidebar
  2. Homepage Sidebar
  3. Footer 1
  4. Footer 2
  5. Footer 3

The Homepage template has a full-width "hero" unit (?slider?) that I know little about, and is not used much, if at all.

Footer 1 is the main footer text (copyright, etc.). It has been altered to be full width.

To edit a widget with WYSIWYG - we are not using a separate dedicated plugin to maximize flexibility and to minimize possible conflicts. Instead, we use the very adaptable "Content Blocks" (Custom Post Widget) plugin, which allows content blocks to be inserted in widgets.

To control where the widgets are shown, we use the Dynamic Widgets plugin

The easiest method of setting up dynamic widgets unfortunately leaves the widget visible on almost all pages for just a few seconds (from steps 2 to 4):

  1. On the widgets admin page, drag the desired widget into the "Main Sidebar" area.
  2. Expand it down and change any of the desired options and click "Save" (Do not hit the "Dynamic Widgets" option link until *after* clicking "Save")
  3. After saving the widget, Click the "Dynamic Widgets: Static" link
  4. Click "Set all options to 'No'" link and then click the "Save" Button at the bottom of the screen. This removes the widget from all pages.
  5. Toggle down each section where you want the widget to appear and toggle the settings.
  6. Save again and check that the widget shows up where desired.

If a Content Block widget shows up in unwanted places, it may be due to a conflict with another plugin. Checking the "Do not apply content filters" in the widget option usually fixes the problem. This is may be (?) only possible if the content block does not include shortcodes.

Content Block can also be inserted into the main content of page with the "[content_block]" shortcode via the "Add Content Block" button above the editor.
