May 30, 2012 - Resources and Services, Updates and Upgrades

Once again the College of Law and Law Library fared well in the Student Technology Fee proposal and award process securing five fiscal year 2013 awards totaling more than $265,000.00. To put this number in some perspective law students contribute around $110,000.00 (650 students x 2 semesters of $85.00 technology fees) each year towards the general Student Technology Fee pool. All colleges and units are invited to submit and defend proposals that can be funded out of this pool. Needless to say the college’s final FY2013 awards offer law students significant value for their student technology fees.

The FY2013 College of Law awards that will be funded in the fall include:

  • Alternative Dispute Resolution Multimedia Recording Lab. A a media/conference lab with recording and videoconferencing capabilities to support, capture and annotate role-play negotiations.
  • Classroom Projector Upgrades. Much-needed replacement of old and out-of-warranty classroom projectors.
  • Law Student Computer Lab Desktop Virtualization Pilot. A thin (or possibly zero—we are still investigating) client solution for the student computer lab which will create new student computing opportunities (multiple operating systems, more software, accessing resources on student laptops, etc.) while providing better reliability, efficiency, and security.
  • Law Library Student Paperless/Scanning Initiative. Essentially replacing copying and microfiche services with modern equipment (like the Kic Scanner recently installed in the law library)allowing students to scan materials (at no cost)and email themselves or save to media.
  • Online Legal Research Collections. This collection of legal databases increases the library’s robust digital collection and services.

Over the fall semester the College of Law Information Technology team will be implementing the new services and resources.

As always we welcome student feedback. With that being said, It is never too early to start thinking about FY2014 Student Technology Fee proposals. If you have an idea, suggestion, or problem that needs addressing contact Terrance Manion. As in years past we will host a Student Technology Fee Forum in the fall to solicit student feedback.

Special thanks to Professor Taylor and 1L Stephen Adams who zealously represented the College of Law on the Student Technology Fee Awards Committee. For more information about the Student Technology Fee and how the College benefitted, visit the College of Law Information Technology website.
