2L Appointed 2013 Curtin Fellow

Urban Fellow Emily McClendon (J.D. '15) has been selected as the 2013-2014 Daniel J. Curtin Jr. Fellowship for the Planning and Law Division of the American Planning Association after a competitive application process. Only one, $3,000 fellowship is awarded each academic year to a student interested in the intersection of law and planning.

"When I graduate from law school, I hope to work at the intersection of planning and land use law," McClendon says "Many planners fail to grasp the legal roadblocks that stymie sustainable development. I believe that breaking down the silos between the legal and planning professions is the most effective way to facilitate environmental planning in the future."

As part of her fellowship, McClendon will chair the Early Career Committee; develop a mentoring program; plan networking events; assist the APA in website development; work on APA membership retention and recruitment; plan webinars, and assist in planning for the national conference being held in Atlanta in April. She also holds a master's in city and regional planning from Georgia Institute of Technology.

McClendon is an active member of the Urban Fellows Program and a graduate research assistant to Julian Juergensmeyer, Ben F. Johnson Jr. Professor in Law and director of the Center for the Comparative Study of Metropolitan Growth.

"Becoming this year's Curtin Fellow is an exciting opportunity. I thank Professor Juergensmeyer for his support and the experience that he has given me," McClendon says.
