Breaking Ground on New Building
ATLANTA — Georgia State University and its College of Law will commemorate the groundbreaking of its new building at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 12, at the corner of John Wesley Dobbs Avenue and Park Place.
University President Mark P. Becker and distinguished guests, including the chancellor of the University System of Georgia and members of the Supreme Court of Georgia and the Georgia General Assembly, are expected to attend. The event is free and open to the public.
"We are excited to break ground on a building that will transform our school and our role in the community," said Steven J. Kaminshine, dean and professor of law. "Our new building is a testament to the dedication of our faculty and university leadership, as well as the faith of the Georgia General Assembly, Board of Regents and governor."
The state legislature approved $58.8 million in bond funding for the new building. The bonds sold in June, which enables the university to begin construction this fall. The project should be completed in time for fall 2015 classes.
The new building will be the university's first dedicated facility for legal education. Since its founding, the College of Law has occupied parts of the Urban Life Building.
"The college has always made a priority of providing skills-based, experiential learning opportunities for our students," said Doug Yarn, professor of law, director of the Consortium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution and chair of the building committee. "This building affords us opportunities for growth in these areas through clinical areas, newer technologies and flexible learning spaces."
Building plans include a conference center, a 230-seat ceremonial courtroom, areas for clinical practice and community outreach, and an International Arbitration Center. The Law Library will occupy the top two floors and offer flexible learning space for individuals, groups, classes and guests, as well as a formal reading room, a café and outdoor terraces.
The SmithGroup and Atlanta-based Stevens & Wilkinson architectural firms designed the building along with a planning committee from the college. McCarthy has been contracted as the project and construction manager.

248B). Turn left (west) onto Edgewood Avenue. At the third light, turn right on to Piedmont Avenue. Take the first left onto Auburn Avenue and proceed through the first light (Courtland Street). Four parking deck entrances are located between Courtland Street and Park Place.
