Mayor Kasim Reed To Speak at Law Commencement
ATLANTA — Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed will be the keynote speaker at Georgia State University College of Law's 29th commencement and hooding ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 17, in the Georgia State Sports Arena.
The College of Law will confer law degrees on 173 graduates of the Class of 2013 from both the full-time and part-time programs.
"I know the students are looking forward to the mayor's remarks," said Steven J. Kaminshine, dean and professor of law. "His is a powerful role model with a distinguished record of leadership and success as a legislator, mayor, public servant and member of the legal profession."
Representatives from the Class of 2013 selected Reed as the commencement speaker.
The hooding ceremony is a symbolic one, in which faculty members drape the hood over the graduate to signify the conferral of an advanced degree. The college's purple hoods indicate legal study, with the blue and red accents representing the university.
This year's class chose Jessica Gabel, associate professor of law; Ryan Rowberry, assistant professor of law; Corneill Stephens, professor of law; and Kelly Timmons, associate dean for student affairs and associate professor of law, to participate in the hooding.
Tickets are not required for the ceremony, and there are no reserved seats. Parking is available in Decks N, K and S for a fee of $7 per vehicle. Guests should allow at least 30 minutes for parking and entry into the Sports Arena.
