Suski Named Assistant Clinical Professor
Emily Suski has been appointed an assistant clinical professor, teaching family law and continuing her work with the interdisciplinary Health Law Partnership (HeLP) Clinic.
Suski has extensive experience advocating for children and adolescents with disabilities.
"From my work prior to law school, I learned the value of interdisciplinary education and work in addressing matters of poverty," she says. "I saw that low-income people with legal problems need more than legal assistance."
Suski earned a dual-degree J.D./Master of Social Work program at University of North Carolina to learn tools for addressing the multiple determinants of poverty. She also has an LL.M. in advocacy from Georgetown University Law Center. After law school, she worked on child advocacy matters for the Legal Aid Justice Center in Charlottesville, Va., which required interdisciplinary training and collaboration. Through her work, she found interdisciplinary collaboration can improve outcomes for youth with health problems and disabilities.
"I found the work challenging, enriching and meaningful. I have continued that work ever since," she says.
Suski also co-taught the Child Advocacy Clinic at the University of Virginia School of Law and was a clinical teaching fellow at Georgetown University Law Center.
"I enjoy helping students understand legal doctrine, its underlying policy, and how it applies to real world problems," she says. "At Georgetown, I learned that I very much enjoy the opportunity to engage in research and scholarship. Teaching allows me to do all of that work."
Throughout her career, Suski has presented to hundreds of medical professionals, lawyers and others on education and disability law — specifically how health, disabilities and poverty affect students in the public education system.
Before joining the faculty, Suski was a clinical supervising attorney with the HeLP Clinic and had an incredibly positive experience.
"I knew first-hand how excellent the HeLP Clinic, the students, faculty and the program generally at Georgia State all are. I am thrilled to be part of the dynamic, vibrant legal community at Georgia State," she says.
