Charity Scott takes on new leadership roles
July 23, 2012
ATLANTA – Charity Scott, Catherine C. Henson Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Law, Health & Society, has joined leadership in two national associations. She has joined the Board of Directors of the American Society of Law, Medicine, and Ethics (ASLME) and has been appointed as a Section Councilor in a new Law Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA).
ASLME is a national, multi-disciplinary organization that serves the legal and health-related professions through educational conferences, publications, and other activities. "ASLME is a leader in bringing together lawyers, academics, and health professionals to collaborate on cutting-edge issues that impact the health of people globally," said Scott. "I am very honored to be asked to serve on its Board."
ASLME is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Among its many other programs, for the past 35 years ASLME has sponsored an annual conference for health law professors. Each year, the conference changes locations among law schools in the U.S., and provides an opportunity for health law professionals to gather, network and share expertise.
Scott's appointment as a Section Councilor in the Law Section of the American Public Health Association is noteworthy, as the specialty group is in its first active year. A Section Councilor is an at-large member of the new Law Section's executive committee.
"Until this year, members interested in the intersection of law and public health worked through the Health Law Special Primary Interest Group," explained Scott. "This SPIG's recent elevation to Law Section status reflects the hard work of its leadership and APHA's awareness of the critical role that law and lawyers play in the public's health."
Established in 1872, APHA is the oldest and most diverse organization of public health professionals in the world. Its multi-disciplinary membership includes researchers, educators, attorneys, administrators, health care providers and other health-related professionals, and public health practitioners.
