Impressive finish for Moot Court team in Brazil

Georgia State Law's Moot Court team was awarded a fourth-place finish in the Inter-American Sustainable Development Law Moot Court Competition, held March 1-3 in Fundaçao Getúlio Vargas Law School in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Seventeen teams from North and South American countries competed in three languages – English, Portuguese and Spanish – and argued cases focused on sustainable development law, human rights law, health law, environmental law and other related topics.

"The success of our team has brought international recognition to the College, and the Center looks forward to sending a team to this competition annually," said Julian Juergensmeyer, director of the Center for the Study of Metropolitan Growth and College of Law professor.
The team argued The Rugendas Population v. The Republic of Tamoio, a case focused on balancing the health of local communities with economic growth. In the first preliminary round, the GSU team argued against Centro Universitário do Pará, and Tulane University in the second.
As the only American team to advance to the semi-finals, the Georgia State Law team argued against both Universidade de Sao Paolo and the Universidade del Rosario (Colombia). Their performance garnered them a fourth-place finish.
This was the second year of the competition, and the second year for Georgia State Law to compete. University moot court teams from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala and the United States participated in the 2012 Intra-American Moot Court Competition. The other American teams were Georgetown University, Tulane University, University of Colorado and University of Puerto Rico.
Next year's competition is scheduled to take place in Bogota, Colombia.
