Applying rules and concepts

ATLANTA -- Though he just joined the Georgia State University College of Law faculty this fall, Cass Brewer is a familiar face in the Atlanta legal community.
Brewer comes to GSU after more than 20 years as a practicing attorney in Atlanta, most recently as a senior partner at Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP. Prior to that, he worked for Elrod & Thompson, P.C. and King & Spalding, LLP in Atlanta and Rose Law Firm, P.C. in Little Rock, Ark.
“I’ve always gotten a lot of pleasure out of training, teaching and guiding young lawyers,” says Brewer, whose parents both became educators late in their careers. “I think teaching is in my blood.”
Although this will be Brewer’s first foray into full-time academia, he’s no stranger to the College of Law: In his early days of practicing in Atlanta, he used to walk to the GSU Law Library from his downtown office to research.
“I love the urban setting of the school,” Brewer says, “and I love its accessibility and affordability. GSU is a great value for those who want a high-quality legal education, including those who attend part-time.”
The Arkansas native studied psychology and religious studies at Vanderbilt University before enrolling in law school at the University of Arkansas, from which he graduated with high honors. He continued his legal education at New York University, where he earned his LL.M. – Master of Laws degree – in taxation.
At GSU, Brewer will be teaching courses on basic federal income taxation and nonprofit organizations. The former is actually the class that led him to focus on tax law as a student and young attorney, though he never thought it would be his specialty. He's one of three new assistant professors -- along with Yaniv Heled and Ryan Rowberry -- to join the law faculty this fall.
“I’m looking forward to making tax, which a lot of students approach with a great deal of trepidation, interesting to the students,” Brewer says, “and showing them that it’s not a numbers game, but it’s a game of applying rules and concepts. If you can understand internal revenue code and regulations, you can grasp any area of the law.”
