December 1, 2004

ATLANTA - (Nov. 30) - The University System of Georgia recently recognized Georgia State University alumnus and law-school benefactor W. Lee Burge as one of six inaugural "Regents' Hall of Fame" award recipients representing Georgia’s 34 colleges and universities. The awards honored three outstanding faculty members and three notable alumni of University System institutions for their contributions to public higher education in the state. "We have great faculty and great students who go on to be good citizens in Georgia communities and supporters of their alma maters," said University System Chancellor Thomas C. Meredith. "This new program is a way for the Board of Regents to express their appreciation for the notable achievements of our faculty, students and graduates."

Burge, who earned his bachelor’s degree in accountancy from Georgia State in 1942, enjoyed a long career with Equifax, ultimately serving as the company’s chairman. Upon his 50th anniversary with Equifax, the company established a presidential scholarship in his honor at Georgia State. Burge served as a member of the Board of Regents and led efforts to establish Georgia State’s College of Law. He has provided the College of the Law with an endowed scholarship, and the school’s endowed W. Lee Burge Chair for Law and Ethics bears his name. He also has served on the Georgia State University Foundation Board, the Robinson College of Business Board of Advisors and the Georgia State Alumni Association.
