Moot Court team wins Best Brief, places third in international competition

Rio moot court team 2011ATLANTA – A team of students from Georgia State University College of Law recently returned from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where they placed third in the First Annual Inter-American Sustainable Development Law moot court competition. The team was sponsored by the law school’s Center for the Comparative Study of Metropolitan Growth.

The team included third-year law students Charlie Britt, vice president of the Moot Court Honor Society, Russell Britt, a member of the Law Review and Moot Court Honor Society (and Charlie’s brother), and Andrew Hagenbush, a law school Urban Fellow and president of the Environmental Law Society. The team was coached by fellow third-year law student Stephanie Stewart, who also serves as president of the Moot Court Honor Society.

In addition to placing third, the team was awarded Best Brief in the competition. Hagenbush also brought home Best Oralist honors in preliminary round two and semi-final round one.

The team argued Indigenous Population Aricapus and Immigrants of the Republic of Mirokai v. Federal Republic of Tucanos, a case focused on balancing sustainable development, human rights, energy and environmental law. Eighteen teams were part of the competition, including teams from the United States, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Guatemala, and Colombia. The competition was unique and challenging in that the participating teams and judges spoke in three different languages – English, Portuguese and Spanish – and simultaneous translation was offered.

In the first preliminary round, the team argued against Universidade do Estado do Amazonas in Brazil, and Florida International University in the second preliminary round. The team was the only team from the United States to advance to the semi-final round. In the semi-finals, the team argued first against Universidade de São Paulo in Brazil, and then against Universidad Del Rosario in Colombia.

This team was the first moot court team from Georgia State Law to compete in a competition held outside the United States.
