What is the Weltner Family Law Inn of Court?
The Weltner Inn is a chapter of a national organization (American Inns of Court) that seeks to increase civility and professionalism among members of the bench and bar through social interaction and legal education. The "Inn" concept is based on the English Inns of Court. The Weltner Inn is limited to attorneys and judges who practice or have an interest in family and juvenile law. The Inn consists of masters (very experienced attorneys and judges), barristers (newer attorneys) and pupils (third year law students). Members are divided into pupillage teams of about eight masters and barristers and one pupil. The team works together to develop and present an educational program at one of the monthly Inn dinner meetings.
What benefits are there for students who become pupils?
Students have the opportunity to network with lawyers and judges and to be mentored by them. Several former pupils have received assistance in obtaining employment as a result of their participation in the Inn. Inn activities include a reception at the Georgia Supreme Court hosted by Justice Thompson, who is an Inn member.
What are the obligations of pupils?
Pupils must attend the monthly Inn meetings from September to May (no meeting in December). Pupils are required to assist their team members in planning and presenting one educational program.
When does the Inn meet?
The Inn typically meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Cross Creek Country Club in northwest Atlanta. However, some meetings may be held at different locations. The September 9 meeting is a kickoff banquet, which is held in near Emory , and the May meeting is usually a reception honoring the graduating pupils.
