Professor Scott Honored for Exceptional Service

September 1, 2004

Congratulations to Professor Charity Scott, who received the University's prestigious Exceptional Service Award at its May 2004 graduation ceremonies. This award was established to recognize a faculty member's extraordinary accomplishment in discipline-related service to the community and must be accompanied by excellence in scholarship and teaching. In Professor Scott's case, her discipline-related service at the national, state, and local levels has been to help develop health law as its own professional discipline and to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between the legal and health-related professions for the benefit of the community's health.

In addition to holding leadership positions in the Health Law Sections of the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Georgia, she has collaborated with many organizations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Healthcare Ethics Consortium of Georgia, to develop health law and ethics programs for diverse interdisciplinary audiences.

Professor Scott has also collaborated with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta to establish a legal services clinic on-site at Children's hospitals to address the social and economic determinants of low-income children's health. Her extensive service to the College of Law and to the University includes her recent work as Chair of the Blue Ribbon Committee on Human Subject Protections, a University-wide committee addressing issues involving GSU's Institutional Review Board, legal compliance, and research integrity.
