Georgia State University College of Law Hosts Law Week

Law Week is a celebration of the legal community and our interaction with it. This year's theme for Law Week is "Dedication to Our Community," with a focus on the interaction of the legal profession with the surrounding communities. During Law Week, students can explore a variety of volunteer activities available following this theme.
Guest Speakers for Law Week:
Many student organizations are arranging for guest speakers during Law Week. More information, such as upcoming guest speakers, dates, and times, will be posted as each guest is confirmed.
Monday
Keynote Speaker: City of Atlanta Attorney Linda DiSantis, Monday, March 29th at 12 noon in Room 170.
Tuesday
PILA: PILA hosts a panel discussion about how students can become involved in public interest organizations and the importance of pro bono work for these organizations and the legal community, Tuesday, March 30th at noon in Room 170. Some of the organizations at the panel discussion include: the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, and the Truancy Intervention Project/Kids in Need of Dreams. Christian Legal Society: "Christian Lawyering: How to Serve God and the Law without Losing Your Faith" Guest Speaker: Stan Seymour, ordained minister and Associate at Kilpatrick Stockton will deliver this uplifting talk on ethical lawyering. Tuesday, March 30th at noon in Room 330.
AWLS: Kim Dammers, AUSA and GSU alum. She will be speaking on the importance of practicing law in the public interest during a legal career. She will discuss her move from King and Spalding into the United States Attorney's office and her convictions behind that move, at 12PM in Room 230.
For 3Ls: "How to Pass the Bar Exam" with Bucky Askew and Teresa Roseborough, Tuesday March 30th, at 5PM in Room 170.
Wednesday
SHLA: SHLA hosts Dr. Michael Eriksen speaking on the new GSU Public Health Institute and his role as an expert witness in national class action tobacco litigation this Fall, Wednesday, March 31st at 12 noon in Room 100.
Federalist Society: Boston University Professor Randy Barnett will discuss his new book Restoring the Lost Constitution, Wednesday, March 31st at 12 noon in Room 230. GSU Law Professor Patrick Wiseman is tentatively scheduled to provide remarks afterward.
Minorities in Practice panel: Wednesday, March 31st, 5PM.
Thursday
SBA hosts Sandra Michaels and Irene Munn Jacobson who will discuss their organization’s key actions in the 2004 legislative session: Irene Munn-Jacobsen, a lobbyist for the District Attorney’s Association, and Sandra Michaels, a lobbyist for the Georgia Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, will speak Thursday, April 1st, at 12 noon in Room 170.
LGLSA: LGLSA hosts Jack Senterfitt, Senior Staff Attorney at Lambda Legal, the topic will be marriage and Lambda's work in that area at 5PM.
Friday
CSO presents "Going Solo: A Practical Approach" from 9:30AM to 11:30AM in Room 230. Highlights of the topics that will be covered by our alumni panel members: Launching Your Solo Practice, Business Operations I and II, and Supporting Your Practice.
Moot Court: How Appellate Advocacy Can Help Your Job Search and Help the Atlanta Community, Friday, April 2nd, at 12 noon.
Brief Encounter: An opportunity for incoming accepted law students to meet the faculty, staff, and students of the College of Law, Friday, April 2nd, 6:00 - 9:00 PM.

Saturday
GSU BLSA Alumni Brunch: Saturday, April 3rd, 10:00AM. The theme is a tour of GSU BLSA's twenty-year history and impact. The guest speakers will be: Linda Chastang - The first black professor at GSU College of Law and first advisor of the GSU chapter of BLSA. A.J. Cooper - founder of the National Black Law Students Association.
Other Law Week Events: Kick off "Party with a Purpose" at Trackside in Decatur. "Can-Can-Karaoke"- Free can of beer (or $2.00 off drink of your choice) when you bring a canned food item. Limit 2 tickets per person. All donations go to the Atlanta Food Bank.
Volunteer Project - Research Volunteers Needed! The Southern Center for Human Rights could use as many students as we can muster to do concentrated research on a single issue. Students could work from the SCHR office, or from their homes, as long as they attended an "orientation" session. Above all, volunteers would have to agree to be governed by the attorney-client relationship and to agree that anything they learned (or were exposed to) through their contact with our office stays in our office. Commit to as much or as little time as you want. Contact Alicia Castillo.
Clothing Drive: The Student Bar Association and Phi Alpha Delta are holding a clothing drive throughout Law Week in the lobby of the Urban Life Building. All donations from the drive will go to the Salvation Army, and during the clothing drive, there are opportunities to win an SBA T-shirt.
Voter Registration Drive
"Write your Representative" Booth: The Student Bar Association will man a "Write your Representative" booth, providing visitors to the booth with pens, paper, and self-addressed, stamped envelopes.
Class of 2004 Class Gift Collection Table (in conjunction with the GSU Law Development Office) Environmental Law Society Baked Goods Sale: The Environmental Law Society is selling baked goods in order to raise money and awareness about CO2 emissions. This is an Acid Rain Allowance program run by the EPA; we buy allowances (permits) to emit pollution (CO2) and then don't emit anything, so we save 1 ton of pollution from being released into the air.
The Barrister's Ball
The Barrister's Ball will be held at the Abbey again this year. Tickets are on sale now from all of the SBA representatives. During Law Week, SBA representatives will be selling tickets in the lobby of the Urban Life Building. When you purchase your ticket, be sure to cast your vote for the 2004 superlatives.
