Former Harvard Law Dean to Speak During Miller Distinguished Lecture Oct. 20

October 7, 2005

The 37th Henry J. Miller Distinguished Lecture Series at Georgia State University's College of Law will be held Oct. 20, when a former Harvard Law dean will deliver an address on changes in corporate governance in a post-Enron world.

The address will be presented by Robert C. Clark, Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor,

Austin Wakeman Scott Professor of Law and former dean of the Harvard Law School from 1989 to 2003. Professor Clark's lecture, titled Corporate Governance Changes: A Morality Tale for Policymakers Too, will begin at 12 noon Thursday, Oct. 20, and will include a formal luncheon at the Georgia State University Student Center State Ballroom.

According to College of Law Interim Dean Steven Kaminshine, Professor Clark's topic for the Miller Lecture Series this year is extremely relevant and timely.

"Professor Clark is a leading scholar and commentator on ethics and corporate governance -- topics that have moved to the forefront of our nation's consciousness in the wake of Enron and other corporate scandals," Dean Kaminshine said. "Professor Clark's expertise and national reputation in this area will ensure a thoughtful and provocative conversation for our law school and the wider community."

A 1966 graduate of Maryknoll College, Professor Clark originally studied for the priesthood and intended to be a foreign missionary. He received a Ph.D. in philosophy from Columbia University in 1971, where his dissertation compared the implicit philosophies of science in the work of behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner and sociologist Talcott Parsons. Professor Clark earned the J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1972. From 1972 to 1974 he was an associate with the Boston law firm of Ropes and Gray, where his practice involved commercial and corporate law. He then spent four years on the faculty of the Yale Law School, where he became a tenured professor. In 1979, he returned to Harvard Law School as a professor of law to concentrate on corporate law.

Professor Clark has written numerous law review articles and book chapters, as well as a one-volume treatise, Corporate Law, which has been called a "paradigm for future student texts." He has also taught Corporate Finance, Theory of the Corporation, Taxation of Corporations and Shareholders, Regulation of Financial Institutions, Government and Health Care, and a seminar entitled Laws, Markets and Morals. He is a member of the board of directors for Time Warner, Inc., Collins & Aikman Corporation, Omnicom Group, Inc., and the Trustee of Teachers Insurance Annuity Association.

Reservations are required no later than Wednesday, Oct. 12, by contacting Vickie Dye at 404-651-4360 or by e-mail at vdye@gsu.edu. Parking is available for $6 in Deck M on Auditorium Place.
