A Resource for the Media
With so many high-profile corporate fraud trials in the news, the national media has turned to Georgia State College of Law Professor Ellen S. Podgor for perspective.
In particular of late, Professor Podgor has been cited in numerous newspapers and magazines for her perspective on major cases including the corporate fraud trials of former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy and ex-WorldCom CEO Bernard Ebbers.
Professor Podgor is co-author of books on white-collar crime and international criminal law, and has authored articles on computer crime, international criminal law, lawyer's ethics, criminal discovery, prosecutorial discretion, corporate criminality and other white-collar crime topics. While her legal and academic accomplishments lend credence to her status as an expert on the subject of white-collar crime, she credits her mix of experience and her effective utilization of technology for attracting the recent rash of media attention. Professor Podgor co-edits a Web log (blog) called White Collar Crime Prof Blog. The COL’s first faculty Web log, the blog has garnered more than 125,000 hits since launching last year due to its timely and analytical comments.
"The blog is an effort to provide in-depth information, explanations and balanced comments on white-collar crime cases," noted Professor Podgor. "With the sentencing of white-collar offenders on the rise, it is no surprise to see the media presenting analysis on this topic. I attribute many of the requests for information I get from the media directly to the blog. It’s a very successful way to interact with members of the media who are looking for accurate information."
A former deputy prosecutor and defense attorney, Professor Podgor teaches courses in international criminal law, white-collar crime, criminal law and procedure, and professional responsibility. She has also shared coaching responsibilities for several trial teams at Georgia State that have been finalists and semi-finalists in national competitions. And one of the most interesting courses she currently teaches also involves the use of technology.
"International Criminal Law is a survey of basic principles of jurisdiction in international criminal law delivered asynchronously via the Internet," explained Professor Podgor. "This virtual course combines multimedia lectures and discussion forums that allow students to respond to problems and scenarios with ease and convenience. It also provides access to me for guidance on content topics and the course overall. It’s a great marriage of technology and the law that is becoming more and more relevant -- and desirable -- for students today."
In addition to her law degree, Professor Podgor earned an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and an L.L.M. from Temple University. In the fall of 1998, she was a Visiting Scholar at Yale Law School. She has been a visiting professor at the University of Georgia School of Law and George Washington University Law School, and held a visiting endowed chair position at the University of Alabama School of Law. Professor Podgor is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) and the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law (ISRCL). She is a member of the American Law Institute (ALI) and an honorary member of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers.
She is also an avid fan of poodles!
