Bar Admissions Course of Study

January 13, 2005

Writing Skills, M.P.T. and Test Anxiety is scheduled by The College of Law at Georgia State University January 8th through February 12, 2005. Fees are $849.

This course, previously offered through the university’s continuing education department, is designed specifically to assist individuals with three unsuccessful attempts to pass the bar with their writing skills for the essay and multi-state performance test (MPT) portions of the bar exam, and to assist with the reduction of test anxiety accompanying the exam. The course consists of six three-hour sessions in the following areas of instruction:

Legal writing: Instruction in the fundamentals of effective writing, such as pre-writing, brainstorming, outlining and organization, coherent and logical paragraph structure, legal analysis and clarity of expression.

Mock Bar Exam Essays and M.P.T. Questions: In each session, a sample bar exam essay or sample M.P.T. questions will be completed, under conditions identical to those encountered on the bar exam. Writing instruction will review each essay. Substantive Law: Lectures in a single area of substantive law will be conducted to provide the knowledge that will be necessary to write the sample mock bar exam essays, which deal with the same area of substantive law. Not designed primarily to teach substantive law.

Test Anxiety: Physical approaches for reducing test anxiety including relaxation and breathing techniques. Cognitive strategies will focus on positive self-talk.

The majority of the course will be spent in small group sessions consisting of one writing instructor for up to 10 participants, who will receive individual attention when completing the legal writing, mock essay and mock M.P.T portions.
