COL Hosts Successful Legal Writing Institute Twelfth Biennial Conference

More than 550 attendees from the U.S. and around the world descended on Georgia State University’s College of Law for the 2006 Biennial Conference for the Legal Writing Institute (LWI) June 6-10.
As the host site, Georgia State’s College of Law sponsored the conference in conjunction with Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law, the Emory University School of Law, John Marshall Law School of Atlanta and the University of Georgia School of Law. 
According to Jennifer Chiovaro, instructor of law and director of the Research, Writing and Advocacy Program at the COL, the LWI conference was well attended and well received.
“Accolades from all over the country are already pouring in on the success of this year’s conference,” Chiovaro said. “We are pleased that the event was the largest LWI conference ever. There were 550-plus legal writing faculty members and other participants in attendance for the conference, which this year carried the theme Legal Writing on the Move.
“The presentations during the conference offered much for exploration,” she added. “Programs included global and international perspectives; advanced legal writing and non-traditional curricular choices; high-tech and low-tech teaching approaches; clinician and practitioner interactions with legal writing; and a focus on scholarship in the legal writing community. Teachers, whether new or experienced, directors and writing specialists found an abundant choice of stimulating programs. In addition, the conference included a visit to the Georgia Aquarium, which rounded out the Atlanta experience for our guests.” 
The Legal Writing Institute is a nonprofit organization with more than 1,800 members representing all ABA-accredited law schools in the United States. LWI also has members from other countries, as well as from English departments, independent research and consulting organizations, and the practicing bar. LWI is dedicated to improving legal writing and provides professionals with a forum for discussion and scholarship on legal writing, analysis and research.
