Spring Miller Lecture Series Event To Feature Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Bassiouni March 14th

The 38th Henry J. Miller Distinguished Lecture Series at Georgia State’s College of Law this spring will feature Nobel Peace Prize nominee M. Cherif Bassiouni.
Professor Bassiouni, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999, is widely known as the "Father of the International Criminal Court" for his role as chair of the drafting committee for the 1998 Diplomatic Conference, which established that court.
The Miller Lecture Tuesday, March 14, will include a luncheon with activities set to begin at 12 noon in the Georgia State Student Center first floor State Ballroom. Professor Bassiouni’s lecture is entitled The Perennial Conflict Between International Criminal Justice and Realpolitik.
Professor Bassiouni is the president of the International Human Rights Law Institute. From 1992-94 he chaired the United Nations Security Council’s commission to investigate war crimes in the former Yugoslavia. In 2004, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights appointed him as the Independent Expert on Human Rights in Afghanistan. As reported in the New York Times, his work in Afghanistan uncovered the secret use of 14 fire bases for military detention, and in April 2005 he issued a report finding that Americans running prisons in Afghanistan were, "engaging in arbitrary arrests and detentions and committing abusive practices, including torture."
Born in Cairo, Professor Bassiouni received multiple law degrees from universities in the U.S., Egypt and Europe, and he is a Distinguished Research Professor of Law at the DePaul University College of Law in Chicago. He is the author of 27 books and editor of 45 books on international criminal law, comparative criminal law, human rights and U.S. criminal law. He has written 225 articles published in law journals and books in the U.S. and abroad. Professor Bassiouni’s publications have appeared in nine different languages and his honors include the Legion d’Honneur from the Republic of France, the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany, the Special Award of the Council of Europe and the Adlai Stevenson Award of the United Nations Association.
