Law Week kicks off April 7

Activities to feature distinguished alumna, student honors luncheon
Launching a week of activities to celebrate the past, present and future of the Georgia State University College of Law, one of the college's own distinguished graduates will deliver the keynote address at the start of Law Week (April 7-12).
Linda DiSantis ( '88), a former vice president and managing attorney in the corporate legal department of UPS and former city attorney for the City of Atlanta, will deliver the keynote speech at 11:45 a.m. April 7 in room 170 of the Urban Life Building.
DiSantis, who in 2006 became the first College of Law graduate to receive the distinguished Ben F. Johnson Jr. Service Award named for the college's founding dean, is the founder and CEO of ethicsLINC, LLC, a business ethics and compliance consulting firm. She is also an executive in residence at the J. Mack Robinson College of Business' Center for Ethics and Corporate Responsibility and has previously practiced with the law firm Alston & Bird, LLP.
Law Week aims to encourage participation by alumni and past supporters, and introduce potential new students to the College of Law by delving into important legal topics. The theme, “Reflecting on Our Past, Focusing on Our Future,” recognizes the College of Law's 25th anniversary year.
Law Week activities are coordinated by the Student Bar Association and other law student organizations.
Kelly Cahill Timmons, associate dean for student affairs, said Law Week co-chairs Jenise Jackson and David Purvis chose the week's theme and praised them for their work, which included choosing a keynote speaker.
“It was very important to them that the keynote speaker be a graduate of the law school,” Timmons said.
Other highlights of Law Week include the annual Honors Day Lunch, which recognizes the accomplishments of current students not only for excellence in course work, but also for their work in service initiatives and competitive programs, like Moot Court and mock trial.
The Honors Day lunch is scheduled for 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, in the House and Senate Salon of the Student Center.
The Law Week celebration is held ahead of nationally-recognized Law Day, which has been observed for half a century in the United States. It was first established by President Dwight Eisenhower to recognize the rule of law as part of the fabric of the nation.
Purvis, a first-year law student hoping to put his experience with this year's events to use as part of next year's activities, said getting involved with Law Week was a way for him to make “the most of my time here.”
“I also have a passion for Georgia State as a whole and viewed this as an opportunity to invite the undergraduate community at GSU who are interested in pursuing legal careers to come by the college and find out more about us,” he said.
