Yale Law School's Ian Ayres to deliver 46th Henry J. Miller Lecture March 18

February 1, 2010

ATLANTA—Ian Ayres, the William K. Townsend Professor and Anne Urowsky Professorial Fellow in Law at Yale Law School, will deliver Georgia State University College of Law's 46th Henry J. Miller Distinguished Lecture at noon Thursday, March 18, in the Student University Center State Ballroom.

Ayres will discuss "Legal Barriers to Diversification." Investors can diversify risk by spreading investments across assets or across time.  While strategies for asset diversification are now well developed, this lecture will show that better time diversification can reduce volatility by about 20 percent. The law has been resistant to both types of risk diversification. Progress has been made in recent decades in facilitating asset diversification, but substantial law reform is needed to allow risk-averse investors to more fully benefit from time diversification.

Ayres is a lawyer and an economist. He is also a professor at Yale's School of Management and the editor of the Journal of Law, Economics and Organization. Ayres clerked for the Honorable James K. Logan of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has previously taught at Illinois, Northwestern, Stanford, and Virginia law schools.

Ayres has published nine books and more than 100 articles on a wide range of topics. In 2007, he published Super Crunchers: Why Thinking-By-Numbers Is the New Way to Be Smart. He is also author of Straightforward: How to Mobilize Heterosexual Support for Gay Rights (Princeton University Press 2005) (with Jennifer Gerarda Brown); Optional Law: The Structure of Legal Entitlements (University of Chicago Press 2005); Insincere Promises: The Law of Misrepresented Intent (Yale University Press 2005) (with Gregory Klass); and Why Not? How to Use Everyday Ingenuity to Solve Problems Big and Small (Harvard Business School Press 2003) (with Barry Nalebuff).

He received his B.A. (majoring in Russian studies and economics) and J.D. from Yale and his Ph.D. in economics from M.I.T.

This event is free and open to the public. Reservations are required by March 4 to Vickie Dye at vdye@gsu.edu. Business attire is required for this special event.
